Programme Note

Lumina takes inspiration from bioluminescent clusters of Arachnocampa luminosa (New Zealand glowworms), and the stasis and resonance of the caves they inhabit. Beyond their constellation-like appearance from a distance, the larvae’s blue-green light lures flying insects, ensnaring them in sticky mucus-droplet threads.

Lumina was commissioned by LA Phil for performance by International Contemporary Ensemble in the Noon to Midnight Festival 2019.
